CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Research

All of students go to school to learn knowledge. Most of the time is used by students to learn, not necessarily at school, but also at home the time must be used to learn. Students’ achievement can be improved if they can learn fairly, protected from various threats, obstacles and difficulties. However unfortunately, some threats, obstacles, and difficulties were always faced by students. The difficulties is were not only faced by the students in teaching learning process but also teachers. The teacher always got many problems in teaching their students. In teaching, the teacher applied many methods, strategies or other approaches to make the students mastering English skill, but on the contrary, the students were still difficult in learning.

At some levels, students who can overcome of learning difficulties, of course, having someone to solve the problems. In certain cases, there are students who have not been able to overcome their learning difficulties, so that the help of a teacher is required to solve the problem in learning.

In Indonesia, English is taught as one of compulsary subjects for students from Elementary school upto University. Among the levels of schools, the students and the teachers were always facing difficulties in learning and teaching the English subject. The problem was not only faced by modern schools in urban areas, but also owned by the traditional schools in the countryside with all their simplicity. In mastering English, most of students got difficulties to memorize vocabularies, to remember sentences formulas, to write sentences, to speak and even to listen English conversation.

In mastering the English skill, the teacher often found a lot of students who faced difficulties so that they got unsatisfactory result. The phenomenon was also happened to the second year students of SMPS Nurul Islam, they found many problems in learning English. In studying, their English teacher always tried to solve their problems with various efforts but it still made the teacher unsatisfied for their bad marks, it was between 60-70. So that students seemed slow performing tasks related to learning activities. As other result, students who had difficulty in learning English looked worried, lazy, easily discouraged, indifferent, sometimes accompanied by a stand against parents, teachers, or anyone who directs the learning process.

Phenomenon of learning difficulties experienced by students is usually evident from the decline in students’ English achievement. In addition to students’ English achievement, learning difficulties can also be seen from their behavior, among which as lazy, easily discouraged, and so forth. So, the way to solve the students’ problem faced by students in learning English was just teacher’s effort in the school, teacher must solve the difficulties of the students in learning English. So, in this case, the researcher would conduct a research to approache the students to find out the kind of problems got by them in learning English and also made an approach to the English teacher to get the informations from the teacher about his effort to solve the students’ problems in learning English.

Based on the explanation above, the researcher was interested in doing a research entitled “English Teacher’s Effort in Solving Students’ Difficulties in Learning English at SMP S Nurul Islam (A Case Study)”.

Identification of the Problem

Based on the background above, the researcher had identified some problems:

  1. The students got low perfomance and achievement in English subject.
  2. The students found difficulties and it made them worried, lazy, easily discourage.
  3. The teacher had done some efforts to solve the students’ problems but it still made him unsatisfactory.

Problem of the Research

Based on the background above, the problem of this research was formulated into how is the English teacher’s effort in solving students’ difficulties in learning English?.

Objective of the Research

The objective of the research is to know the English teacher’s effort in solving students’ difficulties in learning English

Scope of the Research

The research was a case study limited on knowing the English teacher’s effort in solving his students’ difficulties in learning English. In this case, the reaseacher did not limit on a specific skill, but the effort done by the teacher in acknowledging his students’ perfomance and achievement in English subject at second year students of SMPS Nurul Islam.

Significance of the Research

The researcher hoped this research have some significances in the study of teachers’ effort in solving to the students’ difficulties in learning English. The results of this research can be useful both theoretically and practically

  1. Theoretically, this research was hoped give a contribution for teachers’ related to the teacher’s effort in solving to the students’ difficulties in learning English.
  2. Practically, the result of the research was expected to be a valuable input for teachers about the effort that can be done in solving the students’ difficulties in learning English.

Operational Definition

To make the terms used in the title clearer, the researcher would like to give thier definitions:

  1. Teacher’s Effort

Teacher is educator and child, teacher is like a second mother who taught a variety of new things and as a facilitator so that children can learn and develop their potential and abilities in an optimal basis, it’s just different scope of teachers, teachers educate and teach in public schools or private. Effort is an activities regularly and continuously did by someone with the aim of for getting the profit. So, teacher’s effort is the ways choose by teacher in solving the students’ problems in teaching and learning process.

  1. Students’ Difficulties

The difficulties are things that are hard to accomplish, deal with, or understand. The students’ difficulties are students problems in receiving and digesting the subjects which were given by teacher. It can be seen from the students indicated difficulty in achieving and mastering the lesson. As a result, students showed learning achievement was unsatisfactory.
